Avengers Assemble Iron Man Funny Moments

15 Best 'Avengers Assemble!' Moments

The Avengers know how to make an entrance.

While audiences are expecting quite a bit to happen in Avengers: Endgame, comic fans are hoping to see, or rather hear, one thing in particular: Captain America saying the iconic rallying phrase, "Avengers assemble!" The first time the Avengers formed on-screen during the Battle of New York, Cap didn't need to say the words because the circle-round shot did a superb job showing the team assembling, so it would've been overkill to say it, director Joss Whedon explained at the time. While Whedon withheld the signature call-to-arms with the best of intentions then, he outright trolled fans at the end of Age of Ultron when the film abruptly ended just as the words were about to leave Cap's lips. Now, with one Avengers film left to go before Chris Evans reportedly departs the role, what better time for Cap to finally deliver the goods? To tide you over until Endgame, we thought it would be fun to highlight our favorite images of the Avengers assembling in the comic books.

Check out our picks and let us know your favorite "Avengers assemble!" moments in the comments below.

15 The First Assembly (The Avengers Vol. 1 #1)

Art by Jack Kirby

Lineup: Giant-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor & Wasp

This might not be the flashiest Avengers panel ever drawn, but it does mark the first time the team came together. This first issue initially saw Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man and Wasp fight the misunderstood Hulk, but they quickly realized their true enemy was Loki and proceeded to give the trickster god a good, old-fashioned smackdown.

14 Chaos & Order (The Avengers Vol. 3 #60)

Art by Kieron Dwyer

Lineup: Ant-Man, Black Panther, Captain America, Falcon, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Namor, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, Thor, Wasp & Yellowjacket

This image showcases the Avengers at their most classic, with a familiar lineup of powerhouse heroes combining to confront a threat greater than any of them could face alone. In this case, the Avengers were in the midst of battle against the cosmic entity known as the In-Betweener and the then-current incarnation of Scorpio.

13 The Zombie Avengers (Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1)

Lineup: Black Widow, Colonel America, Hawkeye, Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel & Wasp

Normally the sight of the Avengers is cause for rejoicing. Not so in the Marvel Zombies universe, where all of Marvel's heroes and villains eventually fall victim to a zombie plague. This Dead Days one-shot explored the initial outbreak of the virus and the quick, brutal fall of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

12 X-Men vs. Avengers (Avengers: The Children's Crusade #7)

Art by Jim Cheung

Lineup: Captain America, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel, Quicksilver, Spider-Man, Wolverine & Wonder Man

Months before Avengers vs. X-Men soured relations between the two teams, Avengers: The Children's Crusade introduced a major conflict as the Scarlet Witch finally resurfaced. Even Magneto joined the fray. Thanks to Jim Cheung's sleek pencils, the two groups of heroes have rarely looked this good.

11 Building an Avengers World (The Avengers Vol. 5 #2)

Lineup: Cannonball, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Captain Universe, Falcon, Hyperion, Manifold, Shang-Chi, Smasher, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Sunspot & Wolverine

The current volume of Avengers opened with a smaller roster modeled after the first movie. That team only lasted one issue before they were defeated on Mars and Captain America was forced to return home to seek out reinforcements. His new team consisted both of familiar faces and several new additions to Earth's Mightiest Heroes. With this splash page, it was clear that a new day was dawning for the Avengers.

10 Avengers & Atlas United (Avengers vs. Agents of Atlas #4)

Art by Gabriel Hardman

Art by Gabriel Hardman

Lineup: Captain America, Gorilla Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Jimmy Woo, M-11, Namora, Thor, The Uranian, Venus & Wasp

This mini-series pitted the Avengers against a forgotten 1950's-era team known as the Agents of Atlas. Eventually the two groups put aside their differences, as is only right, and we got to see an Avenegrs lineup that featured both the old favorites and the winning combination of a robot superhero and a gun-toting gorilla.

9 The Ultimate Superhero Team-Up (Avengers/JLA #4)

Lineup: Aqauman, Batman, Captain America, Flash, Goliath, Green Lantern, Iron Man, Martian Manhunter, Scarlet Witch, Superman, Thor, Vision, Wasp & Wonder Woman

Marvel and DC don't play ball very often, but the two publishers joined forces long enough for JLA/Avengers to become a reality. The whole project was worth it just for this image featuring the best and most iconic heroes from both teams united under the cry, "Avengers assemble!" And really, what better way to make your super-team truly unstoppable than to add Batman to your ranks?

8 Avengers vs. Skrulls (Secret Invasion #8)

Art by Leinil Yu

Lineup: Too many to count

This image easily ranks among the most heavily fortified of any Avengers gathering, as the big trio of Cap, Thor, and Iron Man lead a huge force of heroes and villains alike in a final stand against an invading Skrull army. Too bad that brief moment of cooperation wouldn't last.

7 Cap Rallies the Troops (Fear Itself #7)

Fear Itself didn't rank very high in our "Ranking Marvel's Events" feature. However, one moment that does stand out from this story comes in the climax, as a battle-weary Captain America takes up Thor's hammer and leads the charge against the Serpent. As we all know, if any Avenger besides Thor himself is worthy to wield Mjolnir, it's Steve Rogers.

6 Battling Kang (Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes #4)

Art by Scott Kolins

Lineup: Captain America, Giant-Man, Iron Man & Thor

The mini-series Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (not to be confused with the animated series of the same name) re-examined the early Avengers comics through a more contemporary lens. And easily one of the best moments from this book came with this image, which paid homage to the classic Jack Kirby and Don Heck era of Avengers as Scott Kolins provided his won take on the team's first clash with Kang the Conqueror.

5 Ending the Dark Reign (Siege #3)

05 - Siege 03 by Olivier Coipel

Art by Olivier Coipel

Lineup: Captain America (Bucky Barnes), Captain America (Steve Rogers), Daisy Johnson, Eden Fesi, Hulkling, Luke Cage, Mockingbird, Ms. Marvel, Patriot, Ronin, Speed, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Stature, Stonewall, Vision, Wiccan, & Yo-Yo Rodriguez

After suffering for a year under the tyrannical rule of Norman Osborn and his organization H.A.M.M.E.R., the Avengers really needed a win. That's where Siege came in. This image perfectly captured the changing tide of the Marvel Universe, as Steve Rogers returned to life just in time to don his old costume and deliver a shield straight to Osborn's armor-plated face. At his side was a who's who of New Avenegrs, Young Avengers and Secret Warriors.

4 Hercules in Charge (Chaos War)

Art by Khoi Pham

Art by Khoi Pham

Lineup: Amadeus Cho, Captain America, Doctor Voodoo, Hawkeye, Hercules, Human Torch, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Mister Fantastic, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Steve Rogers, The Thing, Thor & Wolverine

Chaos War was the culmination of Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente's Incredible Hercules saga. This was really Herc's moment to shine, as he reformed the God Squad and led a massive Avengers force in battle against the twisted Chaos King. What's cooler than the sight of dozens of heroes exploding out of the sky and ready to pound evil to dust?

3 The Kree/Skrull War (Marvels #4)

Art by Alex Ross

Art by Alex Ross

Lineup: Captain America, Captain Marvel, Goliath, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Thor & Vision

Marvels is a series that examines the Silver Age Marvel Universe from the perspective of photojournalist Phil Sheldon. This series was notable as an early showcase for the artistic talents of painter Alex Ross. Ross' rendition of the iconic Kree/Skrull War storyline was an especially jaw-dropping moment.

2 The Ultimates vs. Asgard (The Ultimates 2 #13)

Lineup: Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk, Iron Man, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Thor & Wasp

Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch's The Ultimates is one of those comics that helped coin the phrase "widescreen storytelling" in comics. This already cinematic book reached an even more epic conclusion as the battered Ultimates fought back against an army of Fire Demons, orcs, and other mythological creatures. One look at this enormous and painstakingly rendered splash image is all you need to understand why this series was such an influence on the Marvel Studios films.

1 Confronting Ultron (The Avengers Vol. 3 #22)

Art by George Perez

Art by George Perez

Lineup: Black Panther, Captain America, Firestar, Iron Man & Thor

Leave it to Avengers luminaries Kurt Busiek and George Perez to cook up one of the most iconic moments in Avengers history. This sequence came as the team's latest battle with Ultron wrapped up. Rather than scream and charge into battle, Thor calmly let their enemy know that a reckoning was nigh. Even with his indestructible adamantium body, Ultron must have been trembling a little at this sight.
