When I try to renew my car registration online the NCDOT.gov/dmv site says title number does not exist, even though I have the title in hand and registered this vehicle last November (actually, transferred the tags from older vehicle to this one). Stand in line Tuesday and get it straightened out?? |

You sure you're getting the characters correct, i.e. not putting "O" for zero, etc? I don't remember having to put a title number in for registering...in fact, one car is leased so I don't have the title. Are you sure you are putting in the number they request? |

Online registering and renewal requires the last five chars of your title: |

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but did you get the inspection done first? I know they changed the order on doing things, and it seems like I got that error when I tried to renew mine when I didn't do it in the proper order (even though the title was valid). I could be totally off... |

Which is provided on the paperwork they send to register online, so perhaps having "title in hand" and reading off that is leading to the problem. |

There seems that there is an issue with their website. I had to renew mine and tried to do it online (no inspection required) and got the same error that the title didn't match their records. I had to go into the DMV and renew in person. |

You need it to register/renew online. The title number should be on your registration card. OP, you're going to have to call the DMV and they will transfer you to their online support services, it's a human not a robot don't worry. Wish I had a direct number for ya though cause it's gonna be a 30 minute hold before they pick up to transfer you. You're not late renewing are you? Any insurance problems? License active? Unpaid tickets or tolls? That will all probably stop you from doing it online and would go there in person ! |

No inspection required. All the numbers match title, not typing in "o"'s...off to spend a lovely Tuesday morning at my friendly, local DMV |

I had my car inspected Friday and had the same problem - when the mechanic sent the information in, the computer said the car wasn't in the system. When I called the DMV, the support person told me that they had been having problems with the computers and that the program would "catch up" once the problems were resolved. She said not to worry about it, that my new sticker, etc. would come in the mail just fine. I did register and pay before my inspection, though, so maybe that's why she wasn't concerned. If your registration needs renewal by May 31, you do have a two week grace period, so really you can drive until June 14 without fear of getting a ticket. |

I wonder if some "computer troubles" started a while ago already - we got a renewal notice with "cannot be renewed" and instructions to call. When I called they could not find any reason (we use this car only to drive around town, never had any tickets or any issues). I was able to renew after the call, but it was just very odd... |
